Operation Wyvern Tor

In September 1960, the Junior Leaders Regiment - Royal Corps of Signals came up with the Ten Tors challenge for 200 youngsters and used it as a logistics exercise.
1986 saw the event handed over to 43 (Wessex) Brigade, the regional HQ for the Territorial Army in the Southwest.

The Royal Auxiliary Air Force (RAuxAF) was set up to provide a primary reinforcement capability to compliment the full time personnel in the RAF.
The RAuxAF, or RAF Reserves, consist of volunteers who give up 27 days of their year to their squadron.

Exercise Pashtun Dawn 15

Exercise Pashtun Dawn was 20 Armoured Brigade's FTXs (Final Training Exercises) on Salisbury Plain which ran from 24th July until 21st August 2011. Pashtun Dawn was supported by an exercise running simultaneously called Pashtun Jaguar which was run by JHC (Joint Helicopter Command). Exercise Pashtun Dagger 2011

Pashtun Dagger (named after the Royal Marine's Dagger symbol) provided several scenarios that the 6000 soldiers might come across in Afghanistan during their imminent deployment. This includes searching for IED's (Improvised Explosive Devices), using Close Air Support (CAS), securing an aircraft crash site and dealing with casualties.

Colmenar Viejo Airbase

Colmenar Viejo is a town situated just 30 Kilometres (18 miles) north of Madrid which is home to around 44,000 people. It is also home to the headquarters of the Spanish Army’s Fuerzas Aeromóviles del Ejército de Tierra (Army Airmobile Force) otherwise known as FAMET. The base, which opened on 27th May 1966, is named Coronel Maté after one of the first Helicopter Unit Commanders of FAMET and has around 40 helicopters consisting of CH47D Chinook, EC135 and Super Puma.

RAF Shawbury

Royal Air Force Shawbury, in Shropshire, is home to the DHFS (Defence Helicopter Flying School). Here, 660 Squadron (Army Air Corps), 705 Naval Air Squadron (Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm) and 60 (R) Squadron (Royal Air Force) train student pilots to fly helicopters using the Eurocopter Squirrel HT1 and Bell 412EP Griffin HT1.

Woodpeckers in Britain

Woodpeckers are a well known bird in the UK, up there with the Robin. However, despite all the woods and forests, Britain isn't that great for them. The UK has three resident types, the Great Spotted, Green and Lesser Spotted. A forth type known as the Wryneck which once bred sporadically in southern England is now only a very scarce migrant.

These shy, enigmatic birds live an inconspicuous life almost certainly along your local river, canal or lake, usually remain unseen by flying very fast just a few inches from the waters surface.
