MoD Boscombe Down

MoD Boscombe Down is a large airfield in Wiltshire on the edge of Salisbury Plain which is occupied by a civilian aircraft development company QinetiQ and the Empire Test Pilot School (ETPS). Suprisingly, Boscombe Down's current form originated from Upavon airfield, just to the north of Salisbury Plain near Pewsey.

Colmenar Viejo Airbase

Colmenar Viejo is a town situated just 30 Kilometres (18 miles) north of Madrid which is home to around 44,000 people. It is also home to the headquarters of the Spanish Army’s Fuerzas Aeromóviles del Ejército de Tierra (Army Airmobile Force) otherwise known as FAMET. The base, which opened on 27th May 1966, is named Coronel Maté after one of the first Helicopter Unit Commanders of FAMET and has around 40 helicopters consisting of CH47D Chinook, EC135 and Super Puma.

Middle Wallop: School of Army Aviation

AAC Middle Wallop in Hampshire has been a hive of activity since 1940 when it opened with the intention of being a training base. When the Second World War broke out however, 'RAF Middle Wallop' became home to Spitfire and Blenheim aircraft with 609 Squadron and 604 Squadron respectively. Since then, Middle Wallop has hosted the Royal Air Force, United States Air Force, Royal Navy and Army Air Corps. Nowadays, the airfield is a lot quieter with a very small number of aircraft using it. Rick Ingham takes a look at how the airfield still plays a big role in defending the United Kingdom.

RAF Shawbury

Royal Air Force Shawbury, in Shropshire, is home to the DHFS (Defence Helicopter Flying School). Here, 660 Squadron (Army Air Corps), 705 Naval Air Squadron (Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm) and 60 (R) Squadron (Royal Air Force) train student pilots to fly helicopters using the Eurocopter Squirrel HT1 and Bell 412EP Griffin HT1.

Woodpeckers in Britain

Woodpeckers are a well known bird in the UK, up there with the Robin. However, despite all the woods and forests, Britain isn't that great for them. The UK has three resident types, the Great Spotted, Green and Lesser Spotted. A forth type known as the Wryneck which once bred sporadically in southern England is now only a very scarce migrant.

Halcyon Days: The UK's Kingfisher

Despite being a household name, few people have ever been lucky enough to see a Kingfisher.
These shy, enigmatic birds live an inconspicuous life almost certainly along your local river, canal or lake, usually remain unseen by flying very fast just a few inches from the waters surface.
